THE BOCADO STUD FARM

From Fantasy to Reality

In this research work on the Spanish horse, which was a must after the publication of the History of the Carthusian Horse, the author shows us in a well documented form the origins and history of horses of this stud farm, namely the specimens obtained, selected and improved in the area around the city of Arcos de la Frontera and of San José del Valle (Cadiz), the area where the Purebred Spanish horses arrived in the hands of the duke of Arcos and of the order of the Jesuits. The book takes us back to the beginning of the 18th century to show us, in a detailed yet easy to understand form, the vicissitudes of these horses and of the different owners of this stud farm – the once Terry Stud Farm – considered to be one of the most important in history. It puts the reader in the different estates on which the mares used to graze, shows the brands they carried, the best specimens, the prizes they won, and the people who were the true creators of this bloodline of horses during their almost three centuries of existence. Horses, whose genealogy can be found in more than eighty per cent of the specimens which constitute our horse breed. A long history which will delight the reader for its impartiality and its thoroughness with which the consulted documentary sources are being analysed. The unpublished historical facts which come to light following a painstaking research and are shown in the historical context in which they developed, and which will help the reader to understand the present situation of the Purebred Spanish horses. Through this reading you will became acquainted with the framework of all that fantasy created around these horses by the one who attributed to them a false Carthusian origin. It also exposes the work carried out by this stud farm’s last management which, through ignorance and negligence, led it into an unnecessary and disastrous lethargy. With the full approval of the Spanish state and relying on the well-known Carthusian fantasy this stud farm has been plunged into the greatest functional and economic disaster in its long history.
